Heather Chisum, a single mom of two who works full-time, was outraged to see “Mom I’m out of diapers pls read my report” written on his skin with marker after she picked him up from daycare. She posted photos to Facebook showing what it looked like before and after she scrubbed her toddler’s belly, asking her community if she should be furious.
Her son, Milo, had received only one report stating that he needed diapers, but Heather said she hadn’t been told in person by daycare staff, despite seeing them at drop-off and pick-up. She admitted she doesn’t read every single one of his daily reports (who does?!), but this isn’t the first time the daycare had done this.
“I’ve scrubbed it with several baby wipes, and it’s not coming off. I had plans to take them to the beach to play, and now I can’t because my son has writing all over him.”
The daycare could have written it on his diaper instead, or simply told her in person, she pointed out. “In the very worst case scenario, I can’t see anything other than ‘need diapers’ needing to be written,” she said. “Why a big long message needed to be written across my son’s stomach is beyond me.”
We couldn’t agree more, mama. Apparently the daycare, the Children’s Education Center of the Islands, in Sanibel, FL, agreed too. The executive director, Cindy Carter DeCosta, said in a statement they “are terribly sorry for the distress it has caused the family involved as well as all of our families” and that the employee has been fired, according to WGN9. Heather has removed both of her children from the daycare.
