Mom Makes Incredible Characters Out of Food for Son, Makes a Career Out of It

Many moms seek creative outlets; some find comfort in sewing, knitting, painting, or the like, but it’s rare to find one that fits in seamlessly with day-to-day tasks. But this Aussie mom did just that—and turned her creative outlet into a full-fledged career. Talk about a side hustle!

In 2015, Laleh Mohmedi, mom to 7-year-old Jacob and 2-year-old Charlie, started making food masterpieces, using her son’s healthy meals as a canvas. It all started when she turned her son’s spelt pancakes into a lion and voila—Jacob’s Food Diaries was born.

Laleh started an Instagram account to show off her incredible food creations, but didn’t expect it to take off like it did. Just four years later, @jacobs_food_diaries has over 215,000 followers on Instagram. What started as a hobby has blossomed into a career, with her creations being shared all over the globe via social media.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think this would turn into a full-time career for me,” Laleh told Good Morning America. “So when I’m not making creations for Jacob I’m either making them for clients.”

While mom has no formal culinary training, her artistry in the kitchen is clear. She aims to make every dish healthy for her son, using no artificial coloring, and even adds a signature “J” to each one. Most of Laleh’s creations are Disney characters, as all dishes are inspired by her son, but she’s ventured into Spongebob Squarepants, Sesame Street and even some celebrity portraits too.

“When I first opened up an Instagram account it was purely to inspire other parents to make healthy food fun and to be able to create magical moments with their children,” Laleh said.

It’s no question as to why her masterpieces have been shared by thousands all over the world. Consider us inspired!
