Jim Beam is Giving Its Employees 6 Months of Fully Paid Maternity Leave

Go ahead, pour a little more bourbon in the eggnog this year. Beam Suntory, the maker of Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, Courvoisier and Laphroaig, just announced the company is extending its paid leave benefits, big time. Beginning in 2020, primary caregivers will get 26 weeks of fully paid leave—roughly six months!—after the birth or adoption of a child, and secondary caregivers will receive four weeks of paid leave.

The news places Beam Suntory in rarified company. While more and more employers are expanding their maternity leave policies, only a handful offer six months of fully paid leave to moms. Netflix gives workers up to a year. Adobe, Etsy, Spotify, Zynga and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation all offer six months. Among the Working Mother 100 Best Companies, the average amount of fully paid maternity leave is 11 weeks.

Paid leave isn’t the only way the company is upgrading its benefits in ways working families will love. A new flexible workplace policy will give employees the opportunity to work remotely one day each week, with job-sharing opportunities available globally.

Employees will also be eligible to work compressed weeks, such as four 10-hour days, and under a new Short Fridays benefit, anyone who has completed their required work hours and business needs will be able to depart the office at 2:00 p.m. on Fridays year-round, similar to a beloved offering at Vans.

“I’m incredibly proud to announce how we are turbo-charging our global benefit offerings in 2020 to help our people bring their best selves to work and to life outside of work,” said Paula Erickson, SVP, Chief Human Resources Officer for Beam Suntory.

The company is headquartered in Chicago, and the new policy will impact more than 3,000 employees globally. If you want to raise a glass to these lucky moms and dads, Beam Suntory’s brands include the iconic Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark bourbon brands, Suntory whisky Kakubin and Courvoisier cognac, as well as Knob Creek, Basil Hayden’s and Legent bourbon; Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki and Toki Japanese whisky; Teacher’s, Laphroaig and Bowmore Scotch whisky; Canadian Club whisky; Hornitos and Sauza tequila; EFFEN, Haku and Pinnacle vodka; Sipsmith and Roku gin; and Midori liqueur.

Drink up and enjoy the glow of knowing your hard-earned cash is going toward a company that supports paid parental leave.
